Wood & Roof

We build, we renovate,
we shape the wood.

Chevrons de charpente en bois massif taillés à neuf avec le soleil des Hautes-Alpes

From our workshop in the Hautes-Alpes, we cut the wood by hand, raise the roof structures, renovate the roofs. No subcontracting, no middlemen. From the first rafter to the last ridge nail, the same team is on your site.

From forest to rooftop

Larch from the Hautes-Alpes, Douglas fir, spruce: species selected for their resistance to the mountain climate. We cut the rafters, assemble the mortise and tenon joints and raise the roof structures as we have done for generations in Briançon.

The workshop, where it all takes shape

Every piece is sawn, machined and pre-assembled before reaching the site. Beams, purlins, rafters, curved pieces, barn doors: this is where the most ambitious projects come to life.

From Serre-Chevalier to Guillestre, we have been renovating the roofs and roof structures of the Briançonnais from day one.

Before / After

A barn, a worn-out door, tired cladding. Within a few weeks: solid Douglas fir cladding, bespoke sliding door, meticulous finish.

Every piece is unique

No catalogue, no standard. We take the measurements, choose the timber together and craft a piece that fits seamlessly into the existing building. Here, a Douglas fir sliding barn door with an integrated pedestrian door.

Solid wood interior fit-out by Wood and Roof: staircase, fitted storage and bespoke finishes

Wood, all the way into the home

Beyond the roof structure and the covering, we extend the wood into the building's interior: bespoke fit-outs, solid wood kitchens, integrated storage, staircases, balconies and timber decks with railings. Coherence from the rooftop down to the finishings, all crafted in the same workshop.

Till, founder of Wood and Roof, carpenter-joiner-roofer trained from age 16 in his father's workshop, on a timber frame site in the Hautes-Alpes

Till — the boss on the roof

Till started working with wood at 16, in his father's workshop. Hand tools, journeyman tradition, the rigour of a craft learned young and passed down on site.

After those early training years, he travelled. Sites in Germany, in New Zealand, in Australia, in France: wherever there was timber to cut and roof structures to raise. Encounters, techniques, skills gathered along the way, from one continent to the next.

And then one day, the Hautes-Alpes. The larch trees, the valleys, the silence of the summits. He settled in Briançon and never left. Wood & Roof is that passion turned profession: a craftsman who knows timber because he has done nothing else, everywhere, since the beginning.

No sales team, no design office. You speak directly to the person who cuts the wood and raises the roof structure.

Frequently asked questions

What types of roof structure do you build?

We build traditional mortise and tenon roof structures, industrial trusses, loft conversions and structural repairs. We work with larch, Douglas fir and spruce: species adapted to the Hautes-Alpes climate.

Which areas do you cover?

We work throughout the Briançonnais: Briançon, Serre-Chevalier, La Salle-les-Alpes, Chantemerle, Villeneuve, Saint-Chaffrey, L'Argentière-la-Bessée, Vallouise, Le Monêtier-les-Bains and as far as Guillestre. We do not go further south to Embrun or Gap: we stay focused on the upper Durance valley and the surrounding valleys.

How much does a traditional roof structure cost?

The price depends on the area, the type of timber and the complexity of the project. On average, expect between €80 and €150 per m² for a traditional roof structure in the Hautes-Alpes. We provide a free, detailed quote after a site visit.

Which timber for mountain cladding?

Larch is the most common choice at altitude: naturally weather-resistant, UV-resistant and requires no treatment. Douglas fir is an excellent alternative, softer but very durable. Spruce is more affordable but requires treatment.

Do you offer roof insulation?

Yes, we install sarking insulation (rigid panels above the rafters), wood fibre, cellulose wadding and HPV membranes. These solutions are particularly suited to the alpine climate with harsh winters.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes, we visit free of charge to discuss your project, take measurements and provide a detailed quote with no obligation. Call us on 07 68 82 04 49 or email woodandroof05@gmail.com.
