Roofing and roof covering in the Briançonnais
As a roofer based in Briançon, Wood & Roof handles the installation, restoration and maintenance of larch shingle and steel sheet roofs — two coverings perfectly suited to the rigours of the mountain climate.
Alpine larch shingles: the roofing that speaks of the mountains
The roof is your home's first line of defence against the elements. In the Briançonnais, the demands are particularly severe: snow accumulations that can exceed two metres at altitude, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, persistent ridge-top winds and intense UV radiation. At Wood & Roof, our reference covering remains the alpine larch shingle, split or sawn, laid in staggered courses on a ventilated boarded deck. A living roof that ages gracefully to silver, blends into the wooded slopes of the valleys, and lasts for several decades without treatment.
Every roofing project begins with a full survey of the existing roof: condition of the substrate, under-roof ventilation, HPV underlay, specific details (valleys, hips, verges, chimney flashings). This assessment allows us to provide an accurate quote, whether for a partial restoration, a like-for-like replacement in larch shingle or a full renovation. We do not install clay tiles, slate or standing seam zinc: we focus our craftsmanship on the roofs that truly make sense in our valleys.
Profiled steel sheet: robust, economical, ideal for snow
For outbuildings, barns, agricultural buildings, garages, workshops or contemporary structures, we offer profiled steel sheet roofing. Available as single skin or as a sandwich panel with integrated insulation, steel sheet installs quickly, withstands the snow loads of the Briançonnais thanks to its ribbed profile, and offers a long lifespan for a contained budget. It is today the most relevant solution for most utility buildings in the mountains.
We work steel sheet in matte tones that blend into the landscape: slate hues, earth brown, fir green. Particular care is given to fixings, flashings and connections to existing elements. Whether for a barn converted into housing in Villeneuve-la-Salle, a wood workshop in Saint-Chaffrey or an annexe in the Guisane valley, we adapt the installation to the building's context.
Waterproofing, insulation and long-term durability
A high-performing roof is not limited to the visible covering. We systematically incorporate an HPV underlay (highly vapour-permeable) that protects the insulation from water ingress while allowing interior moisture to escape. For insulation, we use rigid wood fibre boards, a bio-based insulating material particularly suited to summer comfort in the mountains, or blown cellulose for cold loft spaces.
Our work also covers moss treatment of ageing shingle roofs, spot replacement of damaged elements, repair of specific details and the bringing of roof penetrations into compliance. We work throughout the Briançonnais: Briançon, Serre-Chevalier, Le Monêtier-les-Bains, Saint-Chaffrey, L'Argentière-la-Bessée, Vallouise, Montgenèvre and as far as Guillestre. We stay focused on the upper Durance valley, where we know every slope.
Expertise tailored to the demands of altitude
Working in the mountains requires specific logistics and skills. Our teams are trained for work at height on steeply pitched roofs, equipped with temporary fall-arrest systems and accustomed to the changeable weather conditions of the upper Durance valley. We plan our projects around weather windows and site accessibility, including isolated hamlets. Trust a local roofer who knows the terrain, the climate and the timbers that really stand the test of time.
