Traditional roof structure in Briançon

As a craft carpenter in the Hautes-Alpes, Wood & Roof designs and installs bespoke roof structures in solid timber, adapted to the demands of the alpine climate.

The art of traditional roof carpentry in the mountains

In the Briançonnais, a roof structure is not merely an assembly of beams: it is the skeleton of your home, one that must withstand exceptional snow loads, strong winds and the temperature fluctuations inherent to altitude. At Wood & Roof, we uphold the craft of traditional mortise and tenon roof carpentry, a technique proven over centuries that guarantees strength and longevity without resorting to metal connectors.

Every roof structure we build is bespoke — designed around the geometry of your building, the roof pitch specified by the local planning rules and the specific climatic loads of your commune, whether in Briançon, Serre-Chevalier, Chantemerle or Villar-Saint-Pancrace. We work primarily with Larch from the Hautes-Alpes, a timber naturally resistant to weather and insects, as well as Douglas fir for large-section members.

Industrial roof trusses and hybrid structures

For new builds or agricultural buildings in the Guisane and Clarée areas, we also offer the installation of industrial roof trusses. This system, made up of lightweight triangulated assemblies connected by metal plates, allows large spans to be covered without intermediate support, freeing the entire volume below the roof. We also design hybrid structures, combining trusses and traditional beams, to meet the most ambitious architectural projects while keeping costs under control.

Loft conversion and roof space development

Want to gain living space without moving house? Loft conversion is a particularly suitable solution for village houses in the Briançonnais, which often have low roof pitches. Our team handles the entire project: removal of the existing covering, raising of the gable walls, installation of the new roof structure and weatherproofing. We take care to respect the local aesthetic (larch shingles or profiled steel sheet) while integrating high-performance insulation compliant with RE 2020.

Carefully selected solid timber built to last

The choice of timber is critical to the durability of your roof structure at altitude. We select kiln-dried solid timber, graded C24 minimum, from local sawmills in the Hautes-Alpes and the PACA region. Larch, the emblematic timber of our mountains, offers a density and natural resistance to fungi that make it the ideal material for exposed roof structures. For large-section structural members (ridge purlins, principal rafters), we use certified glulam, guaranteeing perfect dimensional stability even under extreme conditions.
